The Catalina Barracks development, inclusive of terraces houses and apartments, has been carefully arranged to capitalise on the varied aspects available at this site. Views across Launch Bay have been maximised and a strong visual and physical connection has been created with the adjacent park. With pedestrian connections to the Sunderland Gully Park and Coastal walkway from the landscaped shared space that divides the site in two. The townhouses fronting the street have been raised above footpath level to ensure privacy whilst allowing outlook to the Oval beyond, this combined with the strong articulation of form, gives these houses a clear address on what is a very desirable street. The apartment building acts as a terminus to the development, a true architectural marker. To the rear terraces fronting the Coastal walkway have been provided with large outdoor areas to the northwest to ensure private living is available inside and out. The development creates a generous residential environment that fits comfortably into the location and makes use of all the advantages the site has to offer.

 

The terraces express individuality and permanence with their strongly articulated forms and quality materials. The palette of brick and timber has been selected to reflect the immediate neighbourhood and to create a link to the historical narrative of the site. It was important to retain a connection to the sites former life as the Catalina Barracks and this is achieved through the use of these materials in a modern way. Living spaces have been located to maximise the views available whilst maintaining privacy. This results in upper-level living balconies that bring life and colour to the development.

 

The planning of the terraces and the apartments was undertaken with two priorities in mind. We needed to provide generous and comfortable living spaces that had great access to views and light. Large windows and open plan living spaces at different levels allowed us to achieve this aim. Coupled with the natural advantages that the site offered we were able to deliver a apartment and terrace house development that work in harmony with the lifestyle of the modern Aucklander. A seamless connection that will improve the lives of anybody who chooses to live there.
